Disaster management is the processes or strategies that are designed and initiated when anything threatens to disrupt normal operations or puts the lives of human beings at risk. Disasters come in all types and categories, fire hazards, violent intrusions, accidents, floods and many other types, both man made and force majeure. LAISEC therefore partners with NGOs, companies and institutions to develop disaster management strategies that place local communities and establishments at par with the very best in the world. Communities, Employees, staff and students, should be well versed with basic disaster mitigation, preparedness, responses and recovery strategies. LAISEC develops and offers tailor made disaster management courses suitable for all categories, and which meet the challenges inherent in various geographical areas.
LAISEC developed these programmes especially after observing several tragic but avoidable incidents in many African communities where people lose their lives and property worth millions destroyed due to lack of basic knowledge in disaster management. We believe that as many community groups, institutions and employees across the job spectrum should be well versed with the sequence of events in the disaster management cycle. The recent tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan, is a perfect example of a well strategized and implemented disaster management plan. Had the earthquake of such magnitude occurred, God forbid, in a country without such preparedness, the fatalities would be in hundreds of thousands, if not more.
Advantages of Learning Disaster Management
Persons who have undergone disaster management training, even the basic levels only, are well equipped to handle common challenges and more so, to mitigate and respond to dangerous situations and incidents. The training enables the groups to;
1. Build a higher degree of esprit de corps amongst themselves.
2. Build trust, reliance and dependability between themselves and the community.
3. Build self confidence.
4. Enhance loyalty to authority and colleagues.
5. Build personal integrity and good judgment.
6. Inculcate the spirit of being proactive to the challenges of life instead of being reactive and dependent on others and the government to solve problems.
7. Boost individual and communal morale.
We also carry out first aid and basic fire prevention training as a separate package from the basics that are covered in disaster management.
